For luxury, the Hôtel du Palais (1 avenue de l’Impératrice, 05 59 41 64 00, www.hotel-du-palais.com, €370-€520) is the grande dame of Biarritz, with gardens jutting into the sea. Stylish Hôtel Edouard VII (21 avenue Carnot, 05 59 22 39 80, www.hotel-edouardVII.com, €78-€128) is light and airy, and full of summery colours, while the modern Hotel Tonic (58 avenue Edouard VII, 05 59 24 58 58, www.tonichotel.com, €155-€295) is well located by the casino and has an excellent restaurant, La Maison Blanche. Maison Garnier (29 rue Gambetta, 05 59 01 60 70, www.hotel-biarritz.com, €90-€125) is a charming guesthouse with an intimate feel (and great showers); it’s close to the beach in a quiet part of town.

Cheaper hotels cluster around the old port and the market. Among the best are the lovingly tended Hôtel Maïtagaria (34 avenue Carnot, 05 59 24 26 65, www.hotel-maitagaria.com, €45-€76) or the friendly Argi Eder (13 rue Peyroloubilh, 05 59 24 22 53, www.hotel-argieder.fr, €42-€80).
