The region of Emilia-Romagna is a relatively little known but fascinating area, with good transport links and foodie attractions. Parma, a beautiful, relaxed city famous for its ham and cheese, as well as for its links to the composer Giuseppe Verdi, is well worth a visit, as is Modena, where you can pick up some expensive balsamic vinegar. Just south of Modena, Maranello is home to Ferrari and a petrolhead’s paradise. Next to the company’s factory and test track is the Galleria Ferrari (via Dino Ferrari), which celebrates the car-making dynasty.
Alternatively, hire a Fiat and explore the Apennine Hills to the south of Bologna; we recommend Poretta Terme, with its calming thermal waters.
