Hotels in the city used to be either tasteful and traditional or soulless modern chains. But a new wave of chic accommodation is sweeping the city. Even the grand old Ritz-Carlton (15 Arlington Street, MA 02116, +16175365700, www.ritzcarlton.com) has got in on the action - not only has the original 1927 hotel reopened after a multi-million dollar restoration, there’s now an equally luxurious contemporary Ritz by the Common (10 Avery Street, +16175747100). Expect to pay $295-plus for both. The antithesis is the upscale yet friendly Beacon Hill Hotel and Bistro (25 Charles Street, MA 02114, +16177237575, www.beaconhillhotel.com, from $245) offering 13 individually designed guest rooms in two converted 19th-century townhouses.
Overlooking the Common, Nine Zero (90 Tremont Street, MA 02108, +16177725800, www.ninezero.com, $209-$289) is a slick modern mid-range hotel with an acclaimed restaurant, Spire. The Newbury Guest House (261 Newbury Street, MA 02116, +16174377666, www.hagopianhotels.com, $114-$195) in three converted brownstones is an affordably elegant choice. For a budget option that pays spiritual dividends, stay at the Monastery Guest House of the Society of Saint John the Evangelist in Harvard Square (980 Memorial Drive, MA
02138, +16178763037, www.ssje.org, $60 per person) – be aware though that there are only 15 rooms so call ahead for availability. Alternatively, Bed and Breakfast Associates Bay Colony (Various locations, +16177200522, www.bnbboston.com) can sort you out with B&B accommodation throughout the city from $75 per person.
