The quaint colonial villages and beautiful beaches of New England are surprisingly close. Within an hour’s drive are historic Concord, with its Revolutionary and literary associations (Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne and Louisa May Alcott were all residents), Salem (see Top 5), of witch-trial notoriety, and the magnificent sweep of Crane Beach, part of a protected nature reserve in Ipswich.
