Bratislava is now happily catering to the business traveller – which means you can snag some excellent bargains at weekends. Right in the centre of town, the French-run four-star Hotel Danube (Rybné námestie 1, 5934 0000, www.hoteldanube.com, €209), with gym, sauna and swimming pool, overlooks the river. Marrol’s (Tobrucká 4, 5778 4600, www.hotelmarrols.sk, €160-€230) and the Radisson SAS Carlton (Hviezdoslavovo námestie 3, 5939 0000, www.radissonsas.com, €192-€227) are other hotels competing in the same four-star market.

The elegant Perugia (Zelena 5, 5443 1818, www.perugia.sk, €130) is a rare central mid-range option, but the high-rise Hotel Kyjev (Rajská 2, 5964 1111, www.kyjev-hotel.sk, €78), next to Tesco, is a bargain, as is the imposing Hotel Tatra (Nám. 1.maja 5, 5927 2123, www.hoteltatra.sk, €116-€129). It’s best to book early for the five-room Gremium (Gorkeho 11, 5413 1026, www.gremium.sk, €46-€52), which is praised by backpackers.
