Edinburgh’s reputation is for festivals and events rather than nightlife, but at least the relaxed licensing hours mean most city-centre bars are open until 1am, and some stay open until 3am (the bulk of the city’s DJ bars are in the Old Town’s narrow wynds and side streets). The Bongo Club (37 Holyrood Road, 558 7604, www.thebongoclub.co.uk) mixes live bands with club nights, which take in a variety of influences. Studio 24 (24 Calton Road, 558 3758, www.studio24edinburgh.co.uk) continues to pull the crowds with its alternative feel.
