Without a car, you won't get very far. 'Village' high streets and shopping malls aside, Jo'burgers never walk - unless their car has been stolen. Even then, they'd call a taxi or rent a car, which is also probably the best option for visitors. Most of the world's major car rental agencies - Avis, Hertz, Budget, etc - maintain offices in Johannesburg.
