Enjoy a day of culture in Altenburg. Less than an hour away from Leipzig by car or train, 1,000-year-old Altenburg has some beautifully preserved buildings. It is also the centre of playing card manufacturing in Germany and the town’s castle holds the Playing Card Museum (Spielkartenmuseum, 034 47 512712). The Lindenau Art Museum (Gabelentzstrasse 5, 034 47 89553, www.lindenau-museum.de) houses one of the most impressive collections of Italian Renaissance altar paintings outside Italy, as well as 20th-century modern German works.
