Hotels

Located a ten-minute drive from the centre is the city’s first designer digs, Hotel Mons (Pot za Brdom 55, 470 2700, www.hotel.mons.si, from €120), with lovely surrounding greenery. In a city short on distinguished lodgings, luxury comes at the cost of cool. The four-style Grand Hotel Union Executive (1 Miklosiceva cesta, 308 1270, www.gh-union.si, from €150) has a corporate feel and, while the spacious rooms and indoor pool are laudable, the few original art deco features are eclipsed by wall-to-wall headache

Those who like budget bunks will love Hostel Celica (Metelkova 8, 230 9700, www.souhostel.si), a former prison. The cells have each had the attentions of a different architect working to the same brief: make the most of the space. The resulting accommodation is amazingly bright and cheery, provided you don’t mind sharing a toilet with a bunch of backpackers. Doubles are en suite and cost from €19.82 per person per night; a dorm bed costs from €16.07.
