Jammed between Belgium, France and Germany, Luxembourg benefits from all three when it comes to cuisine. Still, the locals are proud of their own specialities, like judd mat gaardebohnen (smoked neck of pork with broad beans) and rou-tou-tou (potato hot-pot). Try the local fare at wood-pannelled Maison des Brasseurs (48 Grande Rue, 471371). Handsome brasserie La Fourchette à Droîte (5 avenue Monterey, 221360) has a truffle menu in summer. Luxembourg is a wine-growing country and the local vintages can be found everywhere. Elbling is a popular everyday wine, closely followed by Rivaner. At the top end, Gewürztraminer and Pinot Gris provide depth. Local beers vary from uninspiring Pilsner types through to stronger ales, with Mousel and Simon Dubbel Donkers worth a try. Don’t miss coffee and cake at one of the cafés around place d’Armes: Oberweis (19-21 Grande Rue, 470703) is the grande dame of gâteaux.
