San Francisco is well known as a foodie paradise, renowned for trend-setting fare and for making the reputation of many a chef. Cuisine here takes its cues from the abundance of fresh ingredients within ready reach. ‘California Cuisine’ was born at Alice Waters’ restaurant in Berkeley but lives richly now on the other side of the bay at such places as Zuni Cafe (1658 Market St, CA 94102, +14155522522) and Globe (290 Pacific St, CA 94111, +14153914132). The city’s extensive Asian influence can be found at the many dim-sum parlors – one of the best is Yank Sing (101 Spear St, +14159579300). Great sushi is nearly incidental to the charged atmosphere at the Marina District’s Ace Wasabi (3339 Steiner St, CA 94123, +1415564903). For a mellower mood and perfect sashimi head to the Sunset District for Ebisu (1283 9th Avenue, CA 94122, +14155661770). Italian food isn’t limited to North Beach but if you’re there do stop in for the lasagna at Tommaso ’s (1042 Kearny Street, CA 94133, +14153989696). The Mission District is home to some of the hottest tables in town and Luna Park (694 Valencia, CA 94110, +14155538584 www.lunaparksf.com) is always reliable and affordable. The best way to eat on the cheap in San Francisco is at a Mexican Tacqueria, preferably in the Mission District – La Cumbre (515 Valencia, CA 94110, +14158638205) is one of the best.
